Types of Bathroom Remodels We Do in Minneapolis

Every bathroom project is different. We offer the full spectrum of bathroom remodeling services across the Twin Cities metro.

Full Gut Renovation

$18,000–$45,000+

Everything comes out — walls, floors, plumbing, fixtures — and is rebuilt from scratch with your choice of tile, vanity, tub or shower, and all-new finishes. The most dramatic transformation we offer.

Walk-In Shower Conversion

$5,000–$12,000

Remove an unused bathtub and replace it with a custom tile walk-in shower. Includes frameless glass, niche shelf, and your choice of shower system. A popular upgrade for Twin Cities homeowners 50+.

Master Bathroom Addition

$25,000–$60,000+

Expand an existing master bath or add an en-suite where one does not exist. Includes structural work, plumbing rough-in, and premium finishes throughout. Requires city permits.

Half Bath Remodel

$4,000–$10,000

Update your powder room with a new vanity, toilet, flooring, lighting, and paint. A cost-effective way to impress guests and add value, especially before listing your home.

ADA Accessible Bathroom

$8,000–$20,000

Barrier-free remodels designed for aging in place or wheelchair accessibility — roll-in showers, reinforced grab bars, comfort-height toilets, and wider doorways. We follow all ADA guidelines.

Cosmetic Refresh

$3,000–$8,000

New paint, updated fixtures, a stylish vanity, fresh lighting, and new accessories can completely transform a bathroom without the cost of a full gut. Great for rental properties and pre-sale updates.

What Drives Bathroom Remodel Costs in Minneapolis?

Bathroom remodeling costs in the Twin Cities are influenced by several key factors. Bathroom size is the biggest driver — a 50 sq ft hall bath costs far less than a 120 sq ft master suite. Material selections can swing a budget dramatically: standard porcelain tile runs $3–$8 per square foot while natural stone can reach $20+ per square foot. Labor costs in Minneapolis have risen with demand, averaging $60–$100 per hour for licensed tradespeople. Plumbing and electrical scope matter most — keeping fixtures in their existing locations saves thousands compared to moving drain lines. Finally, permit requirements add $100–$300 and 1–2 weeks for city approval but protect your investment and ensure code compliance.

Bathroom Remodeling Materials & Pricing

Material choices have the biggest impact on your final budget and the overall look of your finished bathroom. Here is a breakdown of typical material costs for Minneapolis bathroom remodels in 2025.

Tile

Porcelain tile
$3–$8 per sq ft
Most popular choice — durable, water-resistant, handles Minnesota temperature fluctuations well. Available in a huge range of styles including wood-look, stone-look, and large format.
Natural stone (marble, travertine, slate)
$8–$20 per sq ft
Premium aesthetic with unique natural variation. Requires sealing every 1–2 years and more careful maintenance. Travertine and slate are more frost-tolerant than marble.
Ceramic tile
$1–$5 per sq ft
Budget-friendly option for walls and low-traffic floors. Less dense than porcelain — not recommended for shower floors in heavily used bathrooms.

Vanities

Stock vanity (big box)
$400–$900
Ready-to-install units in standard sizes. Good value for budget remodels.
Semi-custom vanity
$900–$2,000
More finish options, better construction quality. A popular mid-range choice.
Custom or floating vanity
$2,000–$5,000+
Built to your exact dimensions and finish specifications. Ideal for non-standard spaces and high-end remodels.

Toilets

Standard toilet
$200–$500
WaterSense certified models save water and qualify for some MN utility rebates.
Comfort-height / ADA toilet
$300–$700
Taller bowl height (17–19 inches) recommended for accessibility and aging-in-place remodels.
Smart / bidet toilet
$600–$2,500+
Heated seat, bidet function, auto-flush. Increasingly popular in luxury Twin Cities remodels.

Shower Systems

Standard single showerhead
$300–$800
Thermostatic or pressure-balance valves recommended for safety.
Rain head + handheld combo
$600–$1,500
A popular upgrade — ceiling-mounted rain head paired with a handheld wand.
Multi-function luxury system
$1,500–$4,000+
Body jets, steam function, digital controls. Common in high-end master bath remodels.

Lighting

Basic vanity lighting
$200–$500
Bar or sconce fixtures flanking the mirror. LED recommended for longevity.
Recessed ceiling lighting
$400–$800
Requires electrical work. Provides even, modern ambient light.
Decorative / designer fixtures
$500–$1,500+
Statement pendants or backlit mirrors for luxury bathrooms.

Bathroom Remodel Timeline: How Long Will It Take?

One of the most common questions Minneapolis homeowners ask is how long their bathroom will be out of service. Below is our typical schedule — though every project is unique, and we provide a detailed written timeline before work begins.

Cosmetic Refresh

1–2 Weeks

Paint, new vanity top, fixtures, mirror, lighting, and accessories. No structural or plumbing changes. Minimal disruption.

Standard Full Remodel

2–4 Weeks

Full tile replacement, new vanity, toilet, shower or tub, and lighting. Includes permit time for any plumbing or electrical work.

Full Gut Renovation

4–6 Weeks

Complete demolition and rebuild. Custom tile work, new plumbing rough-in, electrical, heated floors if specified. Permits required.

Master Bath Addition

6–10 Weeks

Expanding into adjacent space or adding a new bathroom. Includes structural work, framing, plumbing, electrical, and all finishes.

Note on material lead times: Custom tile, specialty vanities, and some plumbing fixtures can have lead times of 2–8 weeks. We recommend selecting materials before demolition begins to avoid delays. Our team will flag any long-lead items during your design consultation.

Minnesota Permit Requirements for Bathroom Remodels

Pulling the correct permits is not optional in Minneapolis — it protects your home value, ensures your insurance remains valid, and guarantees the work meets Minnesota State Building Code. Here is what you need to know.

Work That Requires a Permit

  • Moving or adding drain lines or supply pipes
  • Adding or relocating electrical circuits or outlets
  • Installing exhaust fans wired to new circuits
  • Adding heated floor systems (electric radiant)
  • Any structural changes (removing walls, adding doorways)
  • Adding a bathroom where none existed
  • Converting a tub to a walk-in shower (plumbing changes)

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit

  • Replacing existing fixtures in the same location (toilet, vanity)
  • Swapping faucets, showerheads, or supply valves
  • Painting walls, ceilings, and trim
  • Installing new flooring over existing subfloor
  • Replacing mirrors, towel bars, and accessories
  • Replacing a vanity top without moving plumbing
  • Replacing a like-for-like light fixture

Permit Process, Cost & Timeline in Minneapolis

Bathroom permits in Minneapolis are filed with the City of Minneapolis Department of Regulatory Services. Permit fees typically run $100–$300 for a standard bathroom remodel, depending on the scope and valuation of the work. Minneapolis processes most residential permits in 1–2 weeks, though complex projects involving structural changes may take longer.

Suburban municipalities have their own permit offices — Edina, Plymouth, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, and other Twin Cities suburbs each have slightly different requirements and fee schedules, though most follow Minnesota State Building Code closely.

Minneapolis Kitchen & Bath handles all permit applications for you — we prepare the application, submit it to the correct municipality, coordinate inspections, and ensure your project receives its final sign-off. You never have to visit a permit office.

Recent Bathroom Remodeling Projects in the Twin Cities

Every bathroom tells a story. Here are three recent projects that show the range of work we do across the Minneapolis metro.

Bloomington, MN

Kari & Tom's Hall Bath

1970s ranch-style home

This 1970s ranch had an original hall bath with a pink tub, builder-grade tile, and a single-sink vanity that had seen better days. Kari and Tom wanted a clean, modern bathroom without a bathtub — their kids were grown and the tub had not been used in years. We removed the old tub, waterproofed and tiled a 36x48 walk-in shower with a large-format matte gray porcelain tile, installed a frameless glass enclosure, and replaced the old vanity with a 48-inch floating vanity in white oak with a quartz top. New LED lighting, a large mirror, and matte black fixtures completed the transformation.

The Hendersons' Master Bathroom

Luxury spa bathroom renovation

The Hendersons had a dated master bath in their Edina colonial and wanted a luxury spa retreat. We gutted the entire space, expanded the layout into an adjacent closet to add square footage, and built out a wet room with a freestanding soaking tub and a 60x36 walk-in shower with floor-to-ceiling marble-look porcelain, a linear drain, and a rain head with body jets. Schluter electric heated flooring covers every inch of the floor. A custom double floating vanity with integrated lighting mirrors, a separate water closet, and a backlit mirror complete this transformation that their friends now refer to as "the hotel."

Alex's Bungalow Bath

1920s bungalow bathroom renovation

Alex's Northeast Minneapolis bungalow had a charming 1920s bathroom — which also meant 45 square feet, original cast-iron pipes, and zero storage. Our challenge was to make the most of a tiny footprint while modernizing everything. We replaced the clawfoot tub with a compact tiled walk-in shower, installed a wall-mounted floating vanity (which visually opens up the floor space), added a large-format tile floor in a herringbone pattern, and built recessed niche shelving into the wall to maximize storage without taking up floor space. The result feels twice as large as the original — and Alex finally has a bathroom he is proud to show off.
